About Gavarres Natural Park

Gavarres Natural Park (Parc Natural de les Gavarres) is situated in the northeastern Catalonia region of Spain, within the province of Girona. Encompassing the coastal and inland mountain ranges of the Gavarres Massif, the park covers a landscape of gently rolling hills, covered largely by dense Mediterranean forest dominated by cork oak, holm oak, and Aleppo pine. The area's rugged terrain is interspersed with granite outcrops, ancient agricultural terraces, and an extensive network of dry stone walls, reflecting centuries of rural human influence. The park is also home to unique flora such as heather, strawberry trees, and various orchids, alongside fauna including wild boar, roe deer, and diverse bird species like the European robin and Bonelli's eagle. Historically, the Gavarres area was a refuge for local communities, especially during socio-political conflicts, and its cultural landmarks include old hermitages, dry stone huts, and historical villages scattered throughout the park’s boundaries. Visitors can explore over 80 kilometers of marked hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through shaded forests, open meadows, and scenic ridges offering panoramic views of the nearby Costa Brava coastline and the Pyrenees in the distance. The park’s proximity to the Mediterranean Sea ensures a mild, temperate climate making it an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. Its mix of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and accessible trail networks makes Gavarres Natural Park an attractive spot for hiking, wildlife watching, cycling, and enjoying Catalonia’s authentic rural landscape.
